Percy Ellwood Corbett Fonds

Percy Corbett’s fonds reflects his expertise in Roman and international law. The fonds mostly consists of lecture notes written by him for his courses on Roman and international law. Also part of the collection are two bound notebooks on constitutional history, political theory and international law from his student days in Oxford (1919-1924), a few manuscript and typescript essays on Roman law, notes on Canadian-American relations (1942), and notes on international law (1949). Included is a diary (1916), correspondence (including correspondence to the Wilder Penfield and his wife Helen Katherine Kermott Penfield (1944-1959 ), reference letters (1922-1983), articles and newspaper clippings (1920-1989). Cuurriculum vitae and hand-written record about Corbett’s life, wills, addresses, draft of biography of Percy Corbett written by his son David, reviews of P. E. Corbett’s work, and book reviews of Percy Corbett are part of the fonds. Included is also material for 1946 Conference - Moscow Report, common place book (1930’s-1940’s), tributes to Percy Corbett, typed and hand-written Statement and Memorandum on the American-Canadian relations (1958), typescript Impressions-Mostly Oxonian by Percy Corbett and article Oxford-Impressions. Peter Eakins Fonds

The bulk of Eakins' papers concern his work as a geologist and consultant for the mining industry. His Peruvian period is covered by correspondence, reports and newsletters on the San Jose prospect for the Cerro de Pasco Corporation, 1952-1956. His work with Mineral Management Ltd. (1956-1959) is documented by correspondence on mining investments and exploration. There are also files raised by Eakins for his reports on the Axel Heiberg Island project, 1962-1969 and Eakins' participation in the first Canadian workshop on "Education in the Earth Sciences" (Sudbury 1971), and the International Geological Conference of 1972. There is also correspondence, memoranda and notes relating to the history of geology at McGill and in Québec, and some correspondence with Geology Department staff members and students.

The fonds chiefly documents teaching activities and contains McGill University library education course materials including lecture notes, handouts, and assignments for library reference materials and methods, humanities and social sciences as well as government information courses. There is also a much smaller amount of records concerning academic community activities including involvement with the Canadian Studies Committee, 1951-2007. In addition, the fonds includes the print and digital versions of the last curriculum vitae prepared by McNally prior to his retirement form the School of Information Studies in August 2013.

The fonds consists of documents, photographs and electronic media relevant to the personal and professional history of Dr. Peter (Peet) Silvester. The scope predominately covers the period from 1965 to 1996, and includes Dr. Silvester’s published articles, copies of his books, including some translated editions and 35mm slides and photographs used as illustrations and as visual aids in presentations. His personal papers cover the period from his immigration to Canada and to his death, and include some photographs, correspondence between Dr. Silvester and his wife, Elisabeth, and daily journals.

This fonds is divided into nine series. The first series contains his personal papers, with the remaining series covering his professional career. The second series is largely correspondence, and the remaining seven series relate to his research and publication of articles and books. The series covering correspondence and research are organized by subject, and the articles are organized chronologically.

Most of the collection consists of Carpenter's notes and drawings of shells. There are printed catalogues of shell collections from the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean dating from 1857 to 1876. His incoming correspondence is mainly from collectors in the United States and deals with shells. It covers the period 1858-1876. The main letter writers are J.G. Cooper, a collector from San Francisco, William Dall of the Smithsonian, James Lewis of Albany, N.Y. and William Bairn of the British Museum. Some of the material deals with Carpenter's establishment of the shell collection at McGill in 1866. There are files of clippings dealing with the death of his aunt, Mary Carpenter (1787-1877) and that of his sister, also named Mary (1807-1877) who was involved in the establishment of reform schools for girls. Included are some of Carpenter's certificates and diplomas (1834-1843). As well there is a copy of a biography of Carpenter written by his brother, Russell, in 1880. The book quotes extensively from Carpenter's letters, covering not only his years in the ministry but also his travels in the United states prior to the Civil War. As well there are interesting details of life in Montreal from 1865-1877 .

These are the papers of the Secretary-Treasurer for the period 1892-1955. They cover his financial and administrative activities, but do not include the Commission's official minutes, or records of individual schools. Financial records include assessment rolls, 1903-1925, a ledger of tax assessments and payments, 1911-1914, statements of revenue and expenditures, 1900-1910, 1918-1924, and a cash book, 1936-1943. Administrative functions are documented by correspondence files. Correspondents include the provincial Department of Public Instruction, the City of Lachine, teachers, banks, commercial firms involved in school maintenance, suppliers, other school boards, and parents. The emphasis throughout is on financial matters, personnel, and school buildings, with some material on curriculum, use of schools by outside groups, and student activities.
