In reply to his letter of the 5th, they have been unable to find any definite information on the (pomander) canes fitted with vinaigrette. They do not have any examples in the Museum, but found out that there is a Swiss specimen in the Wellcome Museum.

Explains that the proper way was for them (those who wanted to get German periodical) to have put the matter in the hands of the State Department at Washington, who would have put it through in England. All cases of things coming from Germany are handled at Washington. Mentions that he is working on it everyday because of the urgency of the case. Thinks that the Universities would do well to put in their own subscriptions, leaving the booksellers out.

He had a wonderful trip to California when he went for the Lane Lectures. Recommends making a trip through the Canadian Rockies, Yellowstone and Yosemite Park, and the Grand Canyon. Mention of a Christmas card from Mrs. Futcher. Note from Osler written in his book "Memorial addresses delivered at the Harvard Medical School". He says that he was one of his best friends, and one of the few who called him William. Met him with Henry Bowditch in Boston in 1876. Praise for him.

Jenkins points out a method whereby they can finance the journal at a profit. Details about it. He has received from the Royal Commission on Paper authority to issue the new periodical. Will now wait to hear the results of Jenkins' campaign to declare the journal as assured fact and start off a circular for subscriptions in the Service and to secure material for the first issue. No news from Macphail.

Letter to William Osler from W.D. Halliburton, Church Cottage, 17 Marylebone Road, London, England. Halliburton congratulates Osler on his appointment as Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford. He writes of Whitfield's hopes that Osler will also accept to be the Clinical Professor of Medicine at King's College Hospital. Halliburton is not certain that Osler will be allowed to hold both posts simultaneously.
