Quebec skiing history collection

Collection consists of photographs, hotel advertisements and informational pamphlets, postcards, and ephemera illustrating the history of skiing in Montreal and Quebec in the first half of the twentieth century. Approximately 122 black and white photographs and photograph fragments depict skiing locations such as Mount Royal and Ste-Agathe, as well as clubs like the Manitou Club. There are also approximately 74 advertising pamphlets and related documented produced by lodges and ski resorts in the Laurentians region of Quebec with their prices and services, such as ski schools. The collection also includes 28 photographic postcards depicting skiing and ski resorts, chiefly from the Laurentians.

The papers of "Jackrabbit" Johannsen reflect his personal, professional and recreational activities, mainly between 1934 and 1985. The largest part of the papers consists of correspondence with friends and organizations, particularly relating to skiing and outdoor life. Family relations are also covered. A series of brief journals provides a record of some of his daily activities, from 1948 to 1984. The remainder of the fonds include publications about Johannsen, photographs, maps and personal documents such as passports.

The Alice Johannsen fonds reflects her lifelong involvement in nature, museums, community and her fealty towards her father, Herman-Smith (Jackrabbit) Johannsen. It consists of three series; personal and family series, 1994 to 1991, the Redpath series, 1919-1971 and a professional activities series, 1919-1971.
