(Copy of CUS417/118.15) Announces him that he will not come out because of the war. Comments about the Charlton matter (Margaret E. Charlton). He talked with Casey Wood about the library and the latter will develop the ophthalmic side. Repeats that he hopes his collection will go to the College. Explains that his brother Edmund Boyd Osler has given him in the past two years about 1000 pounds for the purpose of purchasing books. Asks him to let him know who is the new Acting Librarian. Glad that his appointment as a Dean is unanimously approved. Suggests having Shepherd's portrait painted by Guthrie of Edinburgh.

He wrote to Perley to find out if it had been officially presented through the Canadian Government Agency to the War Office. It is a splendid offer, which they should be glad to accept. Mentions possible difficulties in settling the locality, as the outcome in North West France and Belgium is still uncertain. Will cable him if there is anything definite.

Letter to Herbert Stanley Birkett from William Osler, Christ Church, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He had cabled him the views of Keogh. The latter had not heard of the offer. Details on the position of the English Hospitals. The tenure of the coast is so uncertain that the War Office cannot undertake any new hospitals in the region of Boulogne. If they came over now they would only be disappointed. Mentions that the Canadian nurses have been in London for a few weeks, with no affectation. They are only now getting drafted into work. The French are sadly in need. He has written to Chauffard asking if the French Government could utilise a hospital unit raised in Canada of men speaking French. It will take some time before the Canadian contingent will be fit to leave. Keogh insists that half trained men only embarrass the Generals. Optimistic word on the spirit of the country. They are very busy. He sees a great deal of interest. Keogh was touched by the McGill offer and also surprised.
