      General note

      James Nelson (1830-1919) was born in Belfast, Ireland and emigrated to Montreal in the 1850s where he set up an architectural practice in partnership with John William Hopkins (1825-1905). He worked with the firm of Hopkins, Lawford and Nelson until 1860, at which time Frederick Lawford (1821-66) and Nelson formed a partnership that lasted until 1865. In 1866 Nelson became the partner of Foiley; later he practised on his own until 1883. From 1883 until 1892 Nelson worked in partnership with Christopher Clift (fl. 1882-1900). One of their notable projects was the 1883 design of the Protestant Church in Saint Lambert, PQ. From 1892 until his death Nelson worked primarily on his own; however, some of his latter projects were designed in association with his son Christopher. Nelson was elected as an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1880. In 1893 he was elected president of the Province of Quebec Association of Architects.

      James Nelson (1830-1919) est né à Belfast (Irlande) et a émigré à Montréal dans les années 1850 où il a ouvert un cabinet d'architectes en s'associant avec John William Hopkins (1825-1905). Il a fait partie du cabinet Hopkins, Lawford et Nelson jusqu'en 1860 et par la suite Frederick Lawford (1821-1866) et Nelson se sont associés jusqu'en 1865. En 1866, Nelson est devenu le partenaire de Foiley; il a ensuite exercé ses activités seul jusqu'en 1883. De 1883 à 1892, Nelson a travaillé en association avec Christopher Clift (fl. 1882-1900). L'un de leurs projets les plus importants date de 1883 : il s'agit de l'église protestante de Saint-Lambert (Québec). De 1892 jusqu'à son décès, Nelson a surtout travaillé seul; certains de ses derniers projets ont toutefois été réalisés en collaboration avec son fils, Christopher. Nelson est devenu associé de l'Académie royale des arts du Canada en 1880 et en 1893 il a été élu président de l'Association des architectes de la province de Québec.
