History

John W. McGregor was born in 1909, in Aubrey, Châteauguay County, Quebec.

He was first trained as a stone-cutter after which he went to the United States and for five years worked for a contracting firm in Boston. While living in Boston he took architecture-related courses at Harvard University. In 1898, he became a member of the Province of Quebec Association of Architects. In 1906, he formed a one-year partnership with Robert Findlay, and together they worked on several residential projects in Montreal. They were also involved in designing some factory buildings. After the end of his partnership with Findlay, McGregor continued practicing architecture independently.
