Biographical history

Gerhard Lomer was born on March 6, 1882, in Montreal, Quebec.

He was a McGill University librarian. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in 1903. He earned his Ph.D. in education from Columbia University in 1910. Lomer taught English and education at McGill from 1903 until 1907. In 1920, he was appointed University Librarian, a position he held until his retirement in 1948.

In 1927, he successfully upgraded McGill's Library School from a summer program to a full graduate course. He served as the Director and Professor of Library Administration from 1927 to 1947. Additionally, Lomer was the associate director of the University of Ottawa Library School and served as president of the Quebec Library Association from 1932 to 1933, becoming the honorary life president in 1937. He also wrote a biography of Stephen Leacock and collaborated on various educational textbooks.

In 1908, he married Aline Marie Justine Brousseau (1883–1909). He died on January 14, 1970, in Ottawa, Ontario.

Letter to Maude E. Abbott from Gerhard R. Lomer, Librarian, Library of McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Lomer sends photocopies of a notice regarding the formation of the McGill Graduates' Society and a Memorandum from the Graduates' Society concerning a scheme to commemorate Dr. Dawson's 25th year as Principal of McGill University.
