Biographical history
Hon. Alexander Selkirk Cross was born on March 22, 1820, in Old Monklands, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
He was the Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench for the Province of Quebec (1877–1892). In 1826, he moved with his family to Canada where he was educated in the Eastern Townships. In 1837, he began to study law in Montreal. When the rebellion broke out in 1837, Cross enrolled amongst the loyal volunteers in Colonel Maitland’s battalion and served until the collapse of the insurrection in 1838. He was called to the bar in 1842 and practised in partnership successively with Mr. Duncan Fisher, Q.C., and Mr. Smith. Under Lord Metcalfe, in 1844, Cross was made Queen’s Counsel. He received his appointment as Judge of the Queen’s Bench in 1877 and stayed in this position until his retirement in 1892.
In 1851, he married Julia Mary Lunn (1826–1902). He died on October 17, 1895, in Montreal, Quebec.
