Biographical history
Born in England, John Howard Toynbee Falk (1881-1950) was a pioneering figure in the development of the education of social workers in Canada and the provision of social services in Montreal. After travelling to Canada in 1908, he became the founding director and lecturer at McGill University’s School of Social Workers and the secretary (1921) and then first executive director (1922) of the Montreal Council of Social Agencies. In 1930 Falk left Montreal to pursue his career in Vancouver and then settled in the United States, holding various positions for charitable organizations around the U.S. until his death in 1950 in Amherst, Massachusetts
Custodial history
The fonds was donated to the MUA by William and Holly Cumberland. Holly Cumberland is a distant relative of John Howard Toynbee Falk by marriage, and received the material by inheritance.
Scope and content
The John Howard Toynbee Falk fonds was created during Falk's time in Montreal, including papers and addresses on the themes of social work including the role of the church in social services. They document the ideas of a leader and educator in the field of social work. In this vein there is, for example, a letter written by William Lyon Mackenzie King to Falk as the Director of the McGill School of Social Workers. These records also complement other holdings of t he McGill University Archives, including the official records of the School of Social Work and the private fonds of the Montreal Council of Social Agencies. The fonds also documents Falk's family life and his work with refugees during the 1905 Russian Revolution.
