Biographical history
Born in Lachine, Quebec, John Bland studied architecture at McGill University where he received a B.Arch. in 1933 and planning in London at the Architectural Association School, earning a Diploma in Planning in 1937. Upon graduation, Bland worked in London for the Planning Department of the London County Council and in 1938 he travelled throughout Europe. In partnership with Harold Spence-Sales, Bland designed a number of commercial and public buildings in England as well as prepared planning reports. Bland returned to Canada in the late 1930s and began his long association with the School of Architecture at McGill University: he served as the Director of the School of Architecture from 1941 until 1972 and became Emeritus Professor of Architecture in 1979. During this time he was also actively involved in the design of numerous architectural and planning projects in partnership with Vincent Rother, Charles Elliott Trudeau, Roy E. LeMoyne, Gordon Edwards, Michel Lacroix and Anthony Shine. The holdings of the CAC reflect Bland's dual career as educator and architect. John Bland was responsible for assembling the materials which now form the archives of the CAC.

"Architectural Drawings, n.d., 245 drawings." Included are measured drawings of historic Quebec architecture sketched by students of Professor John Bland.
"Papers, n.d., 70 cm." Sixty-four undergraduate student papers on historic Quebec architecture are found in this archive.
"Dessins architecturaux, s.d., 245 dessins." Notamment des relevés d'architecture historique du Québec réalisés par les étudiants du professeur John Bland.
"Documents, s.d., 70 cm." Le fonds comprend les travaux de soixante-quatre étudiants de premier cycle portant sur l'architecture historique du Québec.

Various historic buildings in Quebec were drawn to scale from photographs and drawings in the Ramsay Traquair archive (CAC 45) and other sources. The drawings were part of an exercise to compare elements in the composition of façades done by undergraduate architecture students under the direction of John Bland of the School of Architecture of McGill University. The exercise was never completed. For a biography of John Bland see the entry for CAC 41.04.

Différents immeubles historiques du Québec ont été reproduits à l'échelle à partir de photographies et de dessins trouvés dans le fonds Ramsay Traquair (CAC 45) et ailleurs. Les dessins font partie d'un exercice qui avait pour but de comparer divers éléments entrant dans la composition de certaines façades, exercice réalisé par des étudiants d'architecture sous la direction de John Bland de l'École d'architecture de l'Université McGill.
