Biographical history
Born in Lachine, Quebec, John Bland studied architecture at McGill University where he received a B.Arch. in 1933 and planning in London at the Architectural Association School, earning a Diploma in Planning in 1937. Upon graduation, Bland worked in London for the Planning Department of the London County Council and in 1938 he travelled throughout Europe. In partnership with Harold Spence-Sales, Bland designed a number of commercial and public buildings in England as well as prepared planning reports. Bland returned to Canada in the late 1930s and began his long association with the School of Architecture at McGill University: he served as the Director of the School of Architecture from 1941 until 1972 and became Emeritus Professor of Architecture in 1979. During this time he was also actively involved in the design of numerous architectural and planning projects in partnership with Vincent Rother, Charles Elliott Trudeau, Roy E. LeMoyne, Gordon Edwards, Michel Lacroix and Anthony Shine. The holdings of the CAC reflect Bland's dual career as educator and architect. John Bland was responsible for assembling the materials which now form the archives of the CAC.

Scope and content
"Architectural Drawings, 1965-71, 506 drawings" Includes measured drawings of historic architecture in Montreal executed by Bland's undergraduate architecture students from the School of Architecture at McGill University.
"Papers, n.d., 1959-1989, 17.1 m." Seven hundred and fifty-six undergraduate student papers dealing mainly with Montreal architecture are found in the archive.
"Dessins architecturaux, 1965-1971, 506 dessins." Englobent les relevés architecturaux d'édifices historiques de Montréal exécutés par des étudiants en architecture de 1" cycle de Bland à l'École d'architecture de l'Université McGill.
"Travaux, s.d., 1959-1989, 171 m." Sept cent cinquante-six travaux d'étudiants de 1er cycle se rapportant surtout à l'architecture de Montréal font partie de ce fonds.

General note
This archive contains measured drawings of historic buildings in Montreal sketched by architecture students of John Bland (b. 1911), Emeritus Professor of the McGill University School of Architecture. The project was financed by City of Montreal summer grants. The archive also includes student papers produced for the course ""History of Architecture in Canada"" taught by Prof. Bland from 1944 to 1989. For a biography of Bland see the entry for CAC 41.04.

Ce fonds contient les relevés architecturaux d'édifices historiques de Montréal exécutés par des étudiants en architecture de John Bland (né en 1911), professeur émérite de l'École d'architecture de l'Université McGill. Le projet a été financé par des subventions d'été de la Ville de Montréal. Le fonds contient aussi des travaux d'étudiants réalisés pour le cours ""Histoire de l'architecture au Canada"" donné par le Prof. Bland de 1944 à 1989.
