Edward Lear collection

The collection consists of 50 original illustrations created by Edward Lear (1812-1888) executed primarily in watercolour and pencil. These works are part of Lear's Fifty Original Drawings of Birds and a Few Indistinct Pencil Sketches, published between 1835 and 1836. The illustrations and sketches feature depictions of a variety of bird species, including raptors, parrots, cranes, and waterfowl.

Among the species illustrated are the White-tailed Eagle, Grey Parrot, Whooper Swan, Andean Condor, Peregrine Falcon, and King Vulture. The illustrations are often annotated with descriptive details about the colours and features of the birds. Some also include pencil sketches and test patches of color.

Some of the illustrations include unidentified species, including a raptor with prey, an owl, and various parrots. Several of the illustrations are signed and dated by the artist, with the majority titled in pencil at the bottom of each sheet.

The collection consists of four early Irish manuscripts assembled by the Montreal collector Edward Murphy as part of his private library. The manuscripts include a copy of The Midnight Court (Cúirt an mheán oíche) by Brian Merriman, the Life of St. Patrick by John Chambers, Tri Biorghaoithe an Bhais (Three shafts of death) by Geoffrey Keating, and a fragment of an Irish vocabulary (Nuadhfoclóir bogcruaideach).

The fonds consists of literary works composed by Farkas, including scripts, manuscripts, poems, and plays. The records reflect Farkas’ involvement within the arts community, as well as many works relating to Canadian culture, specifically in Quebec. Farkas’ records span from 1952 until 2016. Locations that are reflected in Farkas’ works are Canada and Hungary.

No discernable order has been detected except for boxes 7 and 8 where poems are sorted alphabetically. The records have been filed into series which are detailed below. There are photographs, personal correspondence, translations of other poems and audiovisual materials (cassettes, CDs and DVDs). There are large amounts of correspondence with other artists and performers in both Canada and Europe, another reflection of his involvement within the community. The collection consists of ephemera, artifacts, and publications related chiefly to the Expo 67 World Fair in Montreal and some documents relating to its continuation, Man and His World (Terre des Hommes), an exhibition that was the successor to Expo 67. Many of the records and artifacts were produced by participant countries and sponsors or by the Canadian Corporation for the 1967 World Exhibition. Ephemera includes postcards, visitor passports, and ticket stubs, while other textual documents include guidebooks, magazines, catalogues, books, clippings, information manuals, and some unpublished planning documents. Artifacts include license plates, vinyl records, letter opener, bottle caps, shopping bags, and pins. The collection features pamphlets and brochures for numerous pavilions, events, services, and countries featured, as well as many maps for the Expo 67 grounds and documents related to subsequent seasons of Man and His World.

The collection consists of an illustrated and annotated edition of a monograph titled "The English Cathedral of Quebec, read before the Literary and Historical Society, Quebec, 10th March, 1891," an ordinary copy of the monograph, various documents, black and white photographs of both the cathedral's exterior and interior, as well as portraits of its bishops and canons. The collection also features newspaper clippings related to the history of the cathedral and church discussions, published by the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec and various local newspapers, along with handwritten memos concerning church disputes. It includes an original watercolour drawing of the diocese's coat of arms, ordered by the first Lord Bishop, Dr. Jacob Mountain.
