      Alexander Cowper Hutchison (1838-1922) was born in Montreal and apprenticed as a stone cutter with his father, William Hutchison, who was a prominent Montreal builder. In his capacity as a stone cutter Hutchison supervised the cut-stone work on Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal and the East Block Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. In 1863 Hutchison [set up a practice with] Henri Maurice Perrault (1828-1903), their most noteworthy project being the Montreal City Hall. From 1880 to 1890 Hutchison worked in partnership with Alexander Denton Steele (1841-90). Hutchison and Steele designed a wide variety of commercial, domestic, religious and educational buildings in Montreal, such as the Redpath Museum on the campus of McGill University.

      Alexander Cowper Hutchison (1838-1922) est né à Montréal et a été apprenti tailleur de pierre auprès de son père, A. C. Hutchison, un éminent constructeur montréalais. En qualité de tailleur de pierre, Hutchison a supervisé les travaux de taille du Christ Church Cathedral à Montréal et des immeubles du Parlement à Ottawa. En 1863, Hutchison a ouvert un cabinet en association avec Henri Maurice Perrault (1828-1903), leur projet le plus important ayant été l'hôtel de ville de Montréal. De 1880 à 1890, Hutchison a travaillé en association avec Alexander Denton Steele (1841-1890). Hutchison et Steele ont conçu un grand nombre d'immeubles commerciaux, domestiques, religieux et scolaires à Montréal et notamment le musée Redpath sur le campus de l'Université McGill.
