        History

        Robert Newton Hall was born on July 26, 1836, in La Prairie, Quebec.

        He was a lawyer, educator, judge, and politician. He completed his studies at the University of Burlington, Vermont in 1857. He was called to the Bar of Lower Canada in 1861 and practiced law for several years in Sherbrooke. In 1873, he became one of the first directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He was also a director of several companies and president of the Quebec Central Railway, the Sherbrooke Gas and Water Company, and the Massawippi Railway. From 1877 to 1881, he served as bâtonnier of the district of Saint-François and was elected bâtonnier of the province in 1878. He was appointed to the King's Council in 1880 and became Dean of the Faculty of Law at Bishop's University in 1881. He was a member of Parliament for the Liberal-Conservative Party for the federal riding of Sherbrooke (1882-1891). Hall was appointed a judge of the Queen's Court in 1892 and served until his retirement in 1907.

        In 1862, he married Celina Diana Kendrick (1838- ). He died on June 30, 1907, while visiting Beaminster, England.
