        History

Charles Drinkwater was born in October 1843, in Willows, Lancashire, England.

He was a civil servant. He served Sir John Macdonald as private secretary for nine years and then acquired railway experience in Canada Central Railway. After the incorporation of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company in 1881, Drinkwater became its first Secretary-Treasurer and in 1908, he rose to be a senior assistant to the president. As a secretary to Sir John Macdonald, he gained an insight into parliamentary matters that were of great assistance to him and to the company in matters of legislation at Ottawa. There is a village Drinkwater in Saskatchewan, named after him.

He died on April 23, 1908, in Montreal, Quebec.
