        History

        Born at Maidenhead, England, Doughty came to Canada in 1886 and served for a number of years as a clerk in a Montreal mercantile firm. In 1897 he entered the Québec civil service and later became joint librarian of the Legislative Library at Québec in 1901. Doughty succeeded Douglas Brymner as Dominion archivist in 1904, a position which he held until his retirement in 1935. He was the author of literary works and of several volumes of Canadian history. He was created C.M.G., 1905; K.C.M.G., 1935; elected F.R.H.S. (England), 1902; F.R.S.C., 1905.
