    Biographical history

    David Colville (1886-1974) was born in England and studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London. In 1905 he became a probationer at the Royal Institute of British Architects, and achieved the rank of associate in 1911. Colville emigrated to Canada in 1911 and practised architecture in Vancouver and Montreal, living in Vancouver for approximately thirteen years and approximately forty years in Montreal. He spent the years between 1927 and 1929 in New York working at the firms of James Gable Rogers and Helme, Corbett and Harrison. Colville died in Montreal.

En 1905, il est devenu stagiaire au Royal Institute of British Architects et a accédé au rang d'associé en 1911. Colville a émigré au Canada en 1911 et a exercé l'architecture à Vancouver et à Montréal. Il a vécu à Vancouver environ treize ans et à Montréal une quarantaine d'années. De 1927 à 1929, il a vécu à New York et a travaillé pour les cabinets de James Gable Rogers, et de Helme, Corbett et Harrison. Colville est mort à Montréal.

    Custodial history

    The materials were formerly used as teaching aids by the McGill University School of Architecture. It is possible that they were acquired by past directors of the School of Architecture, Percy Erskine Nobbs or Ramsey Traquair.

    Le matériel servait initialement d'outil pédagogique à l'École d'architecture de l'Université McGill. Son acquisition a sans doute été faite par les anciens directeurs de l'Ecole d'architecture, Percy Erskine Nobbs et Ramsey Traquair.

    Scope and content

    "Architectural Drawings, 1903-10, 45 drawings." The archive's collection includes student drawings of a design for a secondary school; plans, elevations, and details of St. Machar's Cathedral, West Church and Harthill Castle in Aberdeen; drawings for the intermediate exam of the Royal Institute of British Architects and miscellaneous drawings of details of historical European architecture.
