Strachan, John, 1778-1867

John Strachan was born at Aberdeen, Scotland where he attended the Grammar School, and King's College. He received his M.A. in 1797 from St. Andrew's University. Coming to Canada, he was ordained to the priesthood by Jacob Mountain, Bishop of Québec in 1804. In 1812 he was named Rector of York (Toronto) and the rest of his life was spent in Upper Canada (Ontario). Strachan was a member of both the Executive Council and Legislative Council of Upper Canada. In 1839 he was appointed to the new see of Toronto.

Stowell, T. B. (Thomas Blanchard), 1846-1927

Thomas Blanchard Stowell was born on March 29, 1846, in Perry, New York.

He was an American educator. He graduated from Genesee College, now Syracuse University, (B.A., 1865; M.A., 1868; Ph.D., 1881). He served as principal of the Addison Academy in Addison, New York (1865) and as chair of the Academic Department of the Union School in Morrisville, New York (1866). In 1867, he became a professor of mathematics at Genesee Wesleyan Seminary and, in 1868, he was principal of Morris High School in Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1869, he became the chair of Natural Sciences at the Cortland State Normal School in Cortland, New York, and stayed in this position for the next twenty years. In 1889, he left to become the principal of the Potsdam Normal School in Potsdam, New York and remained there for another twenty years. In 1909, he was awarded an honorary LL.D. from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. In 1909, Stowell left Potsdam to become the founding chair of the new Department of Education in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Southern California (USC). In 1918, he was appointed the founding dean of its School of Education. Stowell was also an accomplished scientist in human and comparative anatomy, microscopy, and comparative neurology. He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He retired in 1919 after fifty-four years in education. The USC named the Thomas Blanchard Stowell Hall of Education and Stowell Research Library in his honour.

In 1869, he married Mary Caroline Blakeslee (1849–1935). He died in 1927 in Los Angeles, California.

Stowe, A. M. (Alfred M.), Rev., 1819-1895

Rev. Alfred M. Stowe was born on March 9, 1819, in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

He was a Presbyterian clergyman. In 1849, he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and served as his graduating Class Secretary into the 1880s. He was a pastor at the Canandaigua Presbyterian Church for over thirty-five years. During this time, Stowe acted at different periods as an agent and collector for the American Tract Society and the Auburn Female Seminary.

About 1855, he married Harriet P. (1822-1894). He died on April 19, 1895, in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York.

Rev. Richard Salter Storrs was born on August 21, 1821, in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts.

He was a Congregational clergyman. He graduated from Amherst College (1839) and Andover Theological Seminary (D.D., 1845). He also spent some time studying law in Boston. He served as pastor at the Harvard Congregational Church of Brookline, Massachusetts (1845–1846) and the Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn, New York, from 1846 until his death. He helped establish the New York Independent and became its associate editor (1848-1861). He was president of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (1887-1897) and the Long Island Historical Society (1873-1900). In addition to his work in the church, Storrs was a writer and historian. He published many of his sermons, addresses, and books, e.g., "John Wycliffe and the First English Bible" (1880), "The Recognition of the Supernatural in Letters and in Life" (1881), and "Foundation Truths of American Missions" (1897).

In 1845, he married Mary Elwell Jenks (1824–1898). He died on June 5, 1900, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.
