Joseph John Gurney Terrill was born in 1839 in Brighton Township, Ontario.
He was a science teacher at the Deaf and Dumb Institution in Hamilton and an active public advocate for the deaf. He was described as a person of quiet earnestness, truthfulness, integrity, and kind and unselfish disposition. He was also an enthusiastic ornithologist.
In 1865, he married Euphemia McGann (1840–1927). He died from typhoid fever on December 7, 1869, in Hamilton, Ontario.
